Dermal Fillers (Juvederm & Bellafill)

You may have heard names like Juvederm, Radisse, Restylane, Scupltra, and Bellafill. What are they and what are they used for? The process of aging is different for everyone, however there is one commonality, the loss of volume in our faces. As we age we begin to decrease volume in our facial fat pads and our skin begins to lose collagen and elasticity. Usually the first line we notice is the deepening of our nasal labial folds (the line that runs from the corner of our nose to the corner of our mouths). The next area is usually the marionette line (from the corners of our mouth to the jawline). These lines develop due to loss of volume in the cheek fat pads and the deficit can be corrected by injecting different dermal fillers. This is why an in-person consultation is so important as it allows us to evaluate your skin elasticity, discuss your goals, and develop a customized treatment plan for you.

What are these dermal fillers made of?

Juvederm dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, or HA, is a natural substance in the body that delivers volume to the skin. Modified HA is the main ingredient behind JUVÉDERM. Changing the way the hyaluronic acid is bonded creates different consistencies, giving us more flexibility in choosing a filler that is best for replacing volume in cheeks to giving lips back their pout.

BELLAFILL is the only semipermanent dermal filler approved for use in the US. Bellafill stimulates collagen growth long term to help maintain your youthful appearance for up to 5 years by injecting tiny, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres that are suspended within a base of smooth collagen gel. These microspheres remain within the skin permanently.
A skin test is required prior to treatment with Bellafill.

RADIESSE is not made of hyaluronic acid. It is comprised of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in an aqueous gel carrier. These spheres dissolve over time, leaving behind collagen that your body has built.

SCULPTRA is a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator. It is used most often in treatment of HIV related volume loss of the face.

Can dermal fillers look and feel natural?

During our consultation, we will evaluate your face while it is still (static) and while you smile and frown (dynamic). This multi-focal evaluation will determine your best treatment plan. How long will my dermal filler treatment last?

The duration of your dermal filler is dependent on several factors; the type of filler, where it was injected, the technique used to inject, the amount injected, and your metabolism.

How is the procedure performed?

Dermal filler injections can be performed during an office visit. We do give nerve blocks in some areas to minimize discomfort.To further minimize discomfort and bruising, we also use blunt cannulas.You can return to work after the procedure.

What is the best dermal filler for my lips?

This is a very common question and we ask a question right back “How would you describe the look you want?” If you say “larger and pouty” than JUVEDERM ULTRA may be the best choice. It is a soft filler that is extremely hydrophilic, meaning it has a tendency to draw in more fluid for an extra plumping effect in addition to the filler itself If you say “natural and defined”than JUVEDERM VOLLURE is an option as it creates a soft, contoured look without the additional plumping. JUVEDERM VOLLBELLA creates a soft, hydrated look. This is the filler for the woman that loves the way her lips look when wearing lip gloss.

With all dermal fillers be aware that bruising and swelling is very common. Schedule your appointment with holidays, family events, and other social engagements in mind.
Potential side effects associated with dermal fillers include temporary injection-site reactions such as:

Redness
Swelling
Itching
Pain
Tingling/numbness
Firmness/bumps
Bruising
Discolouration

These reactions may occur immediately or may be delayed, and can last for up to a week. Injection in the lip may cause more swelling and bruising due to the vascularity of this area. As with any injection, there is a risk of infection. One of the most concerning complications is an accidental injection into a blood vessel. As with any other procedure, this is not a complete list of side effects.
